You see that snow globe in Mrs. Ducharme’s hand? Odds are good that she’s about to brain someone with it. Barbara took a hard left in her life, grabbing the reins of familial implosion and doing what any, decent, Satan worshiping housewife would do: make lemonade. Along the way, she carves her own spiritual identity by embracing the side of the universe her fellow PTA mothers wouldn’t dare touch. Darkness, she learns, is not only slimming; it’s not to be feared. She knows there’s power in each of us to change our reality, and when you’ve got your family behind you, there’s very little you can’t accomplish–like saving your blessed derriere from an onslaught of murderous thugs. Babs always had the spark; now she’s got the dark to go with it.

Dramatis Personae Tarot Cards: Kenneth Ducharme Sr.
If you work for the United States Postal Service and you feel 28% safer at work thanks to an underground, concrete bunker constructed in the event of a violent employee outburst, chances are good you have this man’s card in your wallet. The Ducharme patriarch is proud to be known as the Delaware Valley’s premier concrete engineer, although the irony of his family falling apart under his own roof does its part in refusing to let him enjoy it. But even if things aren’t going so well with the wife and kids, at least he’s batting a smidge over .250 in his senior softball league. This is, that’s the worst on the team. The numbers just aren’t adding up for Mr. D at the moment, but if he’s willing to follow his wife’s willful lead, that could change and then some.

Dramatis Personae Tarot Cards: Amanda Ducharme
Amanda Jean came thisclose to having the perfect life: gainfully employed husband, picket fence, fashionably lean figure–until a blackout moment in her past erased it all. Just ask her and she’ll tell you: vodka and the Internet are a cocktail called misery. Since moving back into the family home, she’s taken up one unpopular habit (commandeering daddy’s chair) and one inexplicably popular one (spelling out curse words on her customer’s nails using Turkish rune symbols). But she needn’t worry about gentleman callers once Lucky latches a leering eye on her. Now, all she has to do is prove that she’s both hard on nails, and hard as nails.

Dramatis Personae Tarot Cards: Kenny Ducharme
Kenny’s his name, fixing stuff’s his game. The problem is, he usually breaks it first. On purpose. The youngest of the two children, Kenny’s having a little trouble navigating the snafu that is adolescence much like any teen. To help counter-balance the confusion, he pursues two hobbies with pubescent zeal: learning how inanimate (most times) things work, and working his eager manhood. Kenny can’t seem to stop rubbing the genie, as it were, which leads to a very awkward moment with a certain decorated man. But in the end, it’s the release of his latent hero that makes all the difference.

Dramatis Personae Tarot Cards: Lucky
The daddy-killin’, whiskey-lovin’, self-professed Tex-Mex lady’s man was actually known as Phineas Francisco Lawn before Jasper dubbed him his good-luck charm. Lucky reckons he’s got a way with words, which would be the case if you counted “don’t you dare put that bondo in my broken face, you soulless, sawed-off, rat bastard” as eloquent speech. He’s a team player with a solid handle on his temper. That, of course, comes in handy when he’s forced to sweet-talk his way out of a deadly jam. Unfortunately, he can’t resist a cutting jibe. Ah well, nobody’s perfect–but don’t try and sell that to Lucky.

Dramatis Personae Tarot Cards: Delilah
If you came across Delilah at www.hotornot.com, you’d have to choose “both”. The sassy, young Halloween store employee who invites herself along for the hell-ride is the ultimate “butter-face”–but she knows it, which explains the mask. She’s also fiercely intelligent, irrepressibly confident, and when she wants to be, deliciously vile. No doubt about it: Delilah will steal your breath, while she’s stealing the show.

Dramatis Personae Tarot Cards: Jasper Dix

He’s rude, tattooed, and he carves soap into bugs–but Barbara’s prison pen pal is a devilish dichotomy. On the one hand, he dabbles in philosophy and revels in the concept of evil as an evolutionary staple. On the other, he’s a terrible toddler looking for a mommy. Highly fearful and even more highly fallible, Jasper supplies the Ducharme clan with plenty of impetus to seek strength through darkness. And the result, dear readers, is a bloody revelation.
